Relay For America (“we,” “us,” or “the relay”) operates the website at relayforamerica.org and the programs connected to our coast-to-coast relay honoring American veterans. This Privacy Policy applies to information we collect through the website, our forms, and our messaging programs.
Information we collect
We only collect what we need to run the relay and stay in touch with the people who make it happen.
Information you give us
- Contact details — your name, email address, phone number, and city or hometown when you sign up to run, nominate a veteran, volunteer, host, or contact us.
- Participation details — the segments you apply for, your pace and availability, group size, and similar information needed to place you in the relay.
- Nomination details — information you submit about a veteran you wish to honor.
- Messages — the content of questions, replies, and correspondence you send us.
Information collected automatically
- Standard technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device, and pages visited, used to keep the site secure and understand how it is used.
How we use your information
- To place you in segments, coordinate logistics, and run the relay.
- To send you relay updates, scheduling information, and time-sensitive notices about your segment by email and text message.
- To respond to your questions and provide support.
- To honor the veterans nominated through our program.
- To maintain the security, integrity, and proper functioning of our site and services.
SMS / text messaging
When you provide your phone number and opt in, we may send you text messages related to the relay — including segment scheduling, real-time flag-tracking updates, reminders before your leg, and final arrival estimates.
- These are operational messages, not marketing. We text you only to coordinate your participation — we do not send promotional or advertising texts.
- Message frequency varies based on relay activity and how close your segment is.
- Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan.
- Opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message. Reply HELP for help, or email us at team@relayforamerica.org.
We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile phone number or SMS consent with third parties or affiliates for their marketing purposes. Mobile information is used solely to deliver the messages you signed up for. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
How we share information
We are not in the business of selling your data, and we never will be. We share information only:
- With trusted service providers who help us operate the relay (for example, our email and SMS delivery providers), under agreements that limit their use of your information to providing those services.
- When required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of participants, the public, or the relay.
- With your consent — for example, public-facing details you choose to have shown on the runner wall or honor roll.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as needed to run the relay and fulfill the purposes described here, and then for a reasonable period afterward for recordkeeping. You can ask us to delete your information at any time.
Your choices and rights
- Email — unsubscribe using the link in any email, or by contacting us.
- Text messages — reply STOP to opt out at any time.
- Access, correction, and deletion — email us to review, update, or delete the personal information we hold about you.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your data safe and to limit access to those who need it.
Children
Our services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Minors who participate in the relay should do so with a parent or guardian.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be communicated where appropriate.
